The 'Running Chicken', narrow and wide
The 'Running Chicken' (i can't see it myself), or Lambda Cen nebula, IC 2944/2948, is a complex of ionized gas and dust around 6500 light-years distant. This wide-angle view shows the entire nebula, but a 'zoomed' image, obtained with Telescope Live's CHI-1, reveals more structure, including dark, dense, dusty clouds seen in silhouette -- "Thackeray's Globules", named for the astronomer who first noticed them, in 1950
