Alcyone and Merope of the Pleiades
Alcyone and Merope of the Pleiades
Alcyone, on the left in the blue nebulosity, is the brightest star in the Pleiades, and is located about 440 light years away from Earth. It is a blue-white giant star that is about 7 times more massive than the Sun, and is one of the hottest and most luminous stars in the cluster. Alcyone is believed to be the central star of the Pleiades, and is sometimes called the queen of the cluster.

Merope, at the bottom-right in the blue nebulosity, is one of the seven sisters of the Pleiades, and is also known as 23 Tauri. It is a blue-white star that is about 2.5 times more massive than the Sun and is located about 360 light years away from Earth. Merope is surrounded by a faint blue reflection nebula, which is caused by dust reflecting the star's light.
