Centaurus A (NGC 5128, Caldwell 77)
Centaurus A (NGC 5128, Caldwell 77)
Centaurus A contains an active galactic nucleus where a supermassive black hole having an estimated mass of about 55 million solar masses is located.
This black hole is ejecting a jet at estimated relativistic velocities of around half the speed of light.
A faint filament structure is visible in the upper left of this image which is also seen on images acquired with large professional telescopes.
It is possible that a spiral galaxy may have collided with an elliptical galaxy producing intense starburst regions.
