The Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal is a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the constellation Fornax that was discovered in 1938 by Harlow Shapley. He discovered it while he was in South Africa on photographic plates taken by the 61 cm Bruce refractor at Boyden Observatory, shortly after he discovered the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy.
The galaxy is a satellite of the Milky Way and contains six globular clusters, an unusually high number for its size; the largest, NGC 1049, was discovered before the galaxy itself – in 1835, by William Herschel. Fornax’s globular clusters are curious for other reasons, too. Four are typically ancient, over 12 billion years old. One is about 9 billion years old, while another is very young, around 2 billion years old. Why such a wide range of ages? It is possible they came from other dwarf galaxies that no longer exist due to encounters with the Milky Way.
The galaxy is also receding from the Milky Way at 53 km/s. It mostly contains population II stars – or metal-poor stars, with relatively little of the elements heavier than helium. These objects were formed during an earlier time of the universe.
