IC 63 and IC 59
IC 63 and IC 59
With this photo I wanted to make a close-up of the nebulae IC 63 and IC 59, which for their shape are called "The Ghosts of Cassiopeia". They are located in the immediate vicinity of the star Gamma Cassiopeiae, the central star in the constellation Cassiopeia. They are a combination of reflection (bluish) and emission (reddish) nebulae, and their distance is about 600 light-years.
IC 59, located 20′ north of Gamma Cassiopeiae, is very faint, diffuse, and elongated along the N-S direction. It is primarily a reflection nebula, which appears blue in photographs because it scatters starlight. It looks larger but weaker than IC 63. Together, IC 59 and IC 63 are designated as Sharpless 2-185.
