M51 (Whirlpool)
M51 (Whirlpool)
M51 is located 27 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici.
It has an apparent brightness of 8.4
magnitude and can be observed in small telescopes.
We believe that the reason the spiral arms are so prominent is due to the influence of the approaching small yellowish companion galaxy (NGC 5195) located at the tip of the spiral arms.
Coordinates; RA 202.4696 Dec 47.1953
