NGC 1313 The Topsy Turvy Galaxy
NGC 1313 is a barred spiral galaxy that is about half the diameter of the Milky Way, notably it is a field galaxy meaning it is gravitationally alone not belonging to a larger galaxy group or cluster. It shows strong starburst activity, has an uneven shape and non-central axis of rotation suggesting a past galactic collision. However having no galaxies nearby, suggests that it may have previously absorbed a small companion galaxy. Through my research it is unclear whether the hazy nebulosity surrounds the galaxy itself or is Integrated Flux Nebula in our own galaxy which happens to sit in front of NGC 1313.
Upon close inspection there are so many galaxies in the distance throughout the image, particularly interesting to me is the merger, designated PGC012658 that is occurring at the bottom right of the wide version of the image, I have included a tight crop to display it better.
