NGC 2442 - A Closer Look

NGC 2442 (NGC 2443, PGC 21373, ESO 59-8, the Meathook Galaxy and others) is an intermediate spiral galaxy located approximately 50 million light-yeas away in Volans.

NGC 2434 (PGC 21325, ESO 59-5 and others) is the elliptical above NGC 2442 at the top right.

ESO 59-11 (PGC 21457 and others) is the spiral to the left (east) of NGC 2442.

PGC 21406 is the dwarf galaxy above and to the left (east) of NGC 2442.

Luminance – 40x240s + 36x300s – 340 minutes – binned 1x1
RGB – 99:68:63x300s – 495:340:315 minutes each – binned 1x1

1490 minutes total exposure – 24 hours 50 minutes

Imaged during September, October and November, 2018 at the El Sauce Observatory (Rio Hurtado, Chile) with a FLI PL 9000 on a PlaneWave CDK24 at f/6.5 3974 mm.

This is a Telescope Live (https://telescope.live/) “Pro Data Set” that was acquired during the initial testing phases of the system. I rejected a lot more data and some that I included was a bit suspect. Current data coming out of the systems is much better.
