NGC 2442/2443
NGC 2442/2443
NGC 2442/2443, a.k.a the Meat Hook galaxy or the Cobra and the Mouse. An intermediate spiral galaxy of class SAB(s)bc pec ~50 million light-years away in Volans.
Original observations by William Herschel designated it as a double nebula with a double star in the middle, the northeast portion (top section in this picture) designated as NGC 2443, and the southwest portion (bottom section in this picture) as NGC 2442. The elliptical galaxy NGC 2434 in Volans can also be seen in the top right, surrounded by several other galaxies.
LRGB 7h 40m (11:11:12:12x600s) From CHI-1 Telescope, a Planewave CDK24 with FLI PL 9000 camera, and Astrodon 2nd GEN LRGB, HSO 3nm filters, situated in the Rio Hurtado Valley, Chile. Part of the telescope.live telescope network. Taken on multiple dates in December 2022.
