NGC 5286
NGC 5286
NGC 5286 / Caldwell 84 is a globular cluster located in the Centaurus constellation, at a distance of 35.900 light-years. The cluster is apparently just 4 arcminutes from the bright star M Centauri, which is only 260 light-years away. NGC 5286 was discovered by James Dunlop in 1827.
Currently, the cluster is orbiting the Milky Way in its halo and it might be part of the Monoceros Ring and Gaia Sausage – filaments of stars and matter formed after a dwarf galaxy collided with our galaxy. It shines at an apparent magnitude of +7,6 and it has an estimated age of 12,5 billion years old.
