Omicron Velorum Cluster (IC 2391)
Omicron Velorum Cluster (IC 2391)
IC 2391, also known as the Omicron Velorum Cluster or Caldwell 85, is an open cluster in the constellation Vela.
The cluster is about 500 light-years away from Earth and can be seen with the naked eye.
It contains about 30 stars with a total visual magnitude of 2.5, spread out along 50 arcminutes.
Omicron Velorum (ο Vel) is the brightest member of this open cluster. It is a blue-white B-type subgiant with a mean apparent magnitude of +3.60, approximately 495 light years from Earth.
The brightest star in this image is Delta Velorum (δ Velorum, abbreviated δ Vel), a triple star system, near the border with Carina. It is approximately 80.6 light-years from the Sun. It is one of the stars that at times lies near the south celestial pole due to precession.
Image acquired with AUS-2 (Takahashi FSQ-106ED refractor), data from 3 one-clicks.
Total integration time: 240 minutes
LRGB: 6 sub-frames of 600s with each filter.
