RCW 113
RCW 113
Gum 55 (also known as RCW 113) is a large emission nebula visible in the southern constellation of Scorpius.
It is observed in the southern part of the constellation, near the border with Regulus; it is part of the Scorpius OB1 system, near the open cluster NGC 6231, located on the Sagittarius Arm, and appears as a fairly large nebula with an arcuate shape, which can be photographed through a telescope. Its declination is moderately southern and this means that its observation from the boreal regions is only possible from the more southern temperate regions; from the southern hemisphere however it is observable almost all nights of the year. The best period for its observation in the evening sky is between the months of May and October.
