Wide star field around Delta Lyrae

This widefield image shows the star field around the Delta Lyrae cluster, a sparse open cluster of stars located about 1,220 light years away in the northern constellation of Lyra. This cluster is centered on the member star Delta2 Lyrae for which it is named.

Delta Lyrae is an optical double star. The brighter and closer of the two, Delta2 Lyrae, is a 4th-magnitude red bright giant approximately 900 light years away from Earth. It puts out more energy than 10,000 suns!
The fainter blue star Delta1 Lyrae is a spectroscopic binary consisting of a B-type primary and an unknown secondary.

In the right bottom corner of this image a part of Vega (or α Lyrae) can be seen. This star is relatively close at only 25 light-years from the Sun, and one of the most luminous stars in the Sun's neighborhood (It is the fifth-brightest star in the night sky). Vega was the pole star in the year 12,000 BCE, and will again become the pole star around 14,000 CE.

In between Vega and Delta Lyrae, Zeta Lyrae can be found. Zeta forms a wide binary star (a bit visible in this image), consisting of an Am star and an F-type subgiant.
