A Colourful Cosmic Crab
A Colourful Cosmic Crab
In the year 1054, Chinese astronomers looked up into the night sky and saw a star glowing brightly where they had never seen one before. This new star was actually the afterglow of a supernova explosion.
When we look at the same spot in the sky today, we see the Crab Nebula, a stunningly beautiful cloud of fluorescing tendrils of cosmic gas that noticeably expands each year.
This cloud, is the gaseous remnant of the supernova observed by Chinese astronomers in 1054.
The attached image is a narrowband SHO palette rendition of the Crab Nebula. It was created from 2.5 hours of one-cilck observations on the CHI-1 telescope.
