IC 2944 Running Chicken Nebula
The Running Chicken Nebula (IC 2944/IC 2948) is a large emission nebula located about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus. Named for the chicken-like shape some observers see in wide-field images, it is a vibrant region of star formation illuminated by hot, young stars. The nebula features striking dark globules known as Thackeray's Globules, which are dense pockets of gas and dust that may eventually form new stars.
