Mark Johnston
I have been fascinated by the night sky since I ‘discovered’ Saturn with my 60mm refractor at the age of 10. An APOD-winning astrophotographer, I have been published in Sky & Telescope, Astronomy Magazine, and Space.com. As a NASA Solar System Ambassador, I have conducted thousands of public outreach programs and am a registered cruise ship speaker on astronomy and space science, as well as a Director of the Phoenix Astronomical Society. I frequently post astrophotography images, news, and tutorials on social media. My solar imaging and videos are particularly popular, and I have conducted extensive research on solar cameras and solar image processing techniques.

Processing NGC 3199 with PixInsight

In this series, Nik Szymanek demonstrates how to work with large-aperture data from our 1m telescope in Chile. The target of choice is a rare Wolf Rayet nebula, an excellent target for this telescope. Nik will guide you from start to finish using Pixinsight and provide you with transferable skills that can be applied to your own large-aperture data. You can download the associated data from the bottom of this page.

Processing the Running Chicken Nebula

In this video tutorial, Peter Jenkins walks us through the processing of IC2944, also known as the Running Chicken Nebula. Peter explores some of the advanced techniques to fix vignetting through Dynamic Background Extraction and bad columns through Cosmetic Correction. The images were acquired using narrow band filters (Halpha, SII, OIII) during full moon. It shows the great results you can still obtain during this moon phase.
